King Charles and UK royals to relinquish dozens of patronages

The British Royal Family Attend The Royal British Legion Festival Of Remembrance.
King Charles and other senior British royals are to relinquish patronages of almost 200 charities and organisations after a review of their association with more than 1,000 groups, Buckingham Palace said on Saturday.
The review was launched following the death of Queen Elizabeth to examine all the charities and bodies to which she, Charles and his wife Queen Camilla were connected, either as a president or patron.
Elizabeth was patron of 492 organisations, while Charles was affiliated to 441 and Camilla 100. Following the assessment, just over 830 have been retained by the king and queen, or passed to other members of the royal family.
Organisations are able to apply to have a royal patron who in return can provide publicity for their work and help their achievements to be widely recognised.
Among those that will retain their royal connection include the Royal British Legion, the largest armed forces charity, the Dogs Trust, the Jockey Club and the Wildlife Trusts, a grassroots nature organisation.

"His majesty has consistently demonstrated foresight, courage and leadership as he has helped communities, charities and businesses grapple with the challenges and opportunities inherent in living more sustainably and in harmony with nature," said Craig Bennett, Chief Executive of the Wildlife Trusts.
"It is therefore a great honour that His Majesty has agreed to continue with his patronage."
Conclusions of the review will be shared among the relevant organisations this week, which marks the first anniversary of Charles and Camilla's coronation, the palace said.
King Charles Pays Tribute to His Mother With New Role

Ahead of the one-year anniversary of King Charles III’s coronation on May 6, the royal family has announced which causes will still receive royal patronages from the King, his wife, Queen Camilla, and other royals, who are taking on some of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s causes.
The tradition of patronages, where a royal supports charities, military associations, professional bodies, or public service organizations, dates back to the reign of George II in the 1700s, according to the royal family’s social media.
“Royal patronage highlights the vital work of these organizations and allows their many achievements and valuable contributions to society to be more widely recognised and promoted,” the royal family said in its May 4 announcement.
Some of the patronages are in the U.K. and others in the Commonwealth, an association of 56 independent countries, almost all which were formerly under British colonial rule. Causes run the gamut from military to education, the arts, and wildlife––supporting dogs, horse racing, heritage crafts, the Welsh National Opera, Scottish Highland Games, and more.

When Charles became King in September 2022 after his mother died, the Palace reviewed more than 1,000 royal patronages. After that review, the King and Queen will support more than 800 charities and organizations, the royal family announced.
The late Queen was patron of 492 charities when she died, and her family will retain 376 of those. That includes the King as patron of the Royal British Legion, a charity supporting the military, which his mother supported from 1952 to 2022. Before ascending the throne, Charles, as Prince of Wales, supported 441 organizations, and has kept or passed along 367 to family members.
The King and Queen will also keep supporting causes they did before they assumed their current titles. That includes the King’s interest in environmentalism, with continued patronages for The Wildlife Trusts, a grassroots nature organization, and the Commonwealth Forestry Association, which promotes conservation and sustainable management of the world's forests.
The King will also stay president of clean water NGO WaterAid, a position he’s held since 1991. In a statement, WaterAid U.K.’s chief executive Tim Wainwright said the charity was “extremely grateful and honoured” that Charles would continue his relationship, which has “played a hugely significant role over the past three decades in supporting WaterAid’s vision.”
“His Majesty The King is a driving force for good on critical global issues such as climate change and sustainability,” Wainwright said. “The climate crisis is a water crisis, with droughts drying up springs and wells, and storms and floods damaging infrastructure and contaminating fragile water sources. We work tirelessly with communities to help provide weather-proof water systems and toilets. We know with the enduring dedication and ambition of His Majesty to connect the world to act, we will end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis together.”
TIME reached out to Buckingham Palace for more information about the patronages.
King Charles, 75, returned to public-facing duties on April 30 after taking a step back to receive treatment following the announcement of his cancer diagnosis in February.
An anniversary that is worth celebrating

Monday marks the first anniversary of the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. After a joyous day marking both the solemn majesty of office and the bond between the monarch and his people, King Charles stated that he and his wife would “now rededicate our lives to serving the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth”.

Looking back a year on, he has lived by these words and exceeded them. The monarchy is as strong as ever, binding and uniting our countries and their peoples together. King Charles has served with dignity and stoicism. The travails he faced would have caused many to retreat from public life.
Instead, the King has shown a remarkable dedication to service, and the country has reaped the rewards. His state visit to Germany saw the first speech to the Bundestag by a British monarch, and lent significant force to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s attempts to rebuild ties with the Continent. His visits to France and Kenya were met with warm welcomes from both the state and the people alike.
No discussion of the King’s first year in office would be complete without mention of his treatment following a cancer diagnosis in February. His return to public-facing duties last week was an undoubted boost to the mood of the nation. He is now set to embark on a busy series of engagements, including a visit to Normandy for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, and a state visit from the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
During his treatment, the King used his situation to promote public understanding of cancer, and to bring attention to the organisations supporting patients and their families. It was fitting that after his return to duties his first public engagement was a visit to a specialist cancer centre.
It is unsurprising but gratifying to see that the people have rallied around their monarch. New polling showing significant personal support for the King, and for the monarchy as an institution, is confirmation if any were needed that his openness and dedication to public service have struck a chord with the public.

One year on, it is almost easy to forget how seismic the shift from the reign of the late Queen could have felt. For most Britons, Elizabeth II was the only monarch they had known. King Charles has handled this transition magnificently, retaining tradition and pageantry while also nodding towards the country modern Britain is. The monarchy is in sure hands.

Despite fashion designer and dear friend of Kate’s, Amaia Arrieta, telling the Telegraph that she’s “heartbroken at the moment” over what Kate and her husband Prince William, close insiders to the Prince and Princess of Wales say chemotherapy is going well.
“She’s nearing the end of her treatment, and the doctors believe she’s responding positively,” they said to InTouch Weekly, adding that the fact that William is doing public appearances “is another good sign….[he] wouldn’t have felt right leaving her at home for something like that if she wasn’t feeling well.”
But, will she return to the public eye soon? Insiders think so, because, allegedly, she’s already planning her return.
“Making sure her children feel safe and secure has been and will always be Kate’s top priority,” they said. “But once she’s gotten everyone back into a routine at home, she’ll likely make her official comeback.” So, until she feels like she and her children are back to a routine, she’ll allegedly come back to the public eye, and sources also told InTouch Weekly that they think she’ll come back with an event that honors cancer patients.
For now, we just hope she’s getting all the comfort and care she needs.
