Great Zimbabwe is best known architecturally for its massive stone walls and structures, particularly the Great Enclosure, which is one of the largest and most impressive ancient stone constructions in sub-Saharan Africa. The walls were built using dry stone masonry, meaning they were constructed without mortar, and they are notable for their height (up to 11 meters or 36 feet) and craftsmanship. The stone structures include the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure, and the Valley Ruins, all of which were symbols of the wealth and power of the ruling elite.

The primary trade good of Great Zimbabwe was gold. The city controlled nearby gold mines and became a key player in the gold trade, which connected it to the Swahili Coast and, through those city-states, to the Indian Ocean trade network. In exchange for gold, Great Zimbabwe imported luxury goods such as Chinese porcelain, Persian pottery, Indian beads, and Arabian glass. This extensive trade network made Great Zimbabwe a major economic and political force in the region.
