The conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has intensified with the resurgence of the March 23 Movement (M23), a rebel group primarily composed of ethnic Tutsis. On January 27, 2025, M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, entered Goma, a strategic city in eastern Congo, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
Background of M23
The M23 rebel group emerged in 2012 when former members of the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) accused the DRC government of failing to honor a 2009 peace agreement. After being defeated in 2013, M23 resurfaced in 2022, citing the DRC government's alleged neglect of the Congolese Tutsi and other minorities.
Involvement of Rwanda
The DRC government, along with the United Nations and several Western nations, accuses Rwanda of supporting M23, a claim Rwanda denies. Reports indicate that Rwandan troops have been supporting the rebels, with some regular Rwandan forces confirmed to be present in the DRC.
Sponsors and Supporters
The M23 rebels are primarily backed by Rwanda, which has been accused of providing military support to the group. The DRC government has also been accused of collaborating with the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), an ethnic Hutu paramilitary group. Both the DRC and Rwanda deny these allegations.
Current Situation
The capture of Goma by M23 has led to significant civilian displacement, with thousands fleeing the city amid intense fighting. The international community, including the United Nations and countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and France, have condemned the rebel advances and called for de-escalation.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing clashes between M23 rebels and the Congolese military. The international community continues to call for a ceasefire and negotiations to resolve the conflict.
