The couples' interactions were recorded on video at three different times: before therapy, after therapy, and during a follow-up assessment two years later. During these assessments, each partner discussed one current problem in their relationship. The researchers also assessed the couples' satisfaction with their relationship at the two-year follow-up and examined whether the therapy had a clinically significant impact on their relationship. Additionally, they checked the marital status of the couples five years after treatment.

 

The study found that, as expected, negativity and withdrawal observed in the couples decreased from the end of therapy through the two-year follow-up. Importantly, IBCT led to more significant improvements in communication from the end of therapy to the two-year follow-up compared to TBCT.

The study provided evidence that couples' communication improved after the therapy ended. Furthermore, IBCT demonstrated better maintenance of these communication improvements over the follow-up period compared to TBCT.

 
  1. Reduction in Conflict

An empirical study conducted in 2021 investigated the effectiveness of a conflict prevention program rooted in the core therapeutic strategies of integrative behavioral couple therapy. Twelve individuals, forming six couples, participated in the study. They completed assessments using the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), IBCT Questionnaire (IBCTQ), and ASPA-A before the program, immediately after it, and at a three-year follow-up.

 

The results revealed that the couples exhibited increased acceptance of differences, significant enhancements in empathic connection and unified detachment, and reported higher overall satisfaction levels in their relationships, particularly in their DAS scores.

  1. Long-Term Benefits

A two-site clinical trial conducted in 2004 of 134 seriously and chronically distressed couples were randomly assigned to IBCT or traditional behavioral couple therapy. This included a five-year follow-up without additional treatment.

 

This clinical trial showed that IBCT and TBCT produced similar gains in relationship satisfaction by the end of treatment, but couples in IBCT evidenced significantly greater maintenance of gains than their TBCT counterparts during the first two years of follow-up.
