So, you have finally made up your mind after getting an invite for a round of golf with your co-workers or friends, but you do not know where to start? Maybe you have put it off, coming up with excuses, but now you have finally made up your mind and even bought golf gloves.

The truth is, the idea of playing your first ever round can be intimidating, particularly if you are used to a more casual golfing experience.

For those of us who have been playing the sport our whole lives, we can take for granted all the little nuances that go into the day. But for beginners, it is a whole new journey, and it is understandable that you are worried about the first step.

Honestly, there has never been a better time for golf, and if you are here, it is probably that you know what as well. Here are some of the things you have to know before the first round of golf.

Know the common golf terms

As part of the expert’s beginner’s guide to golf, it is important to know the golfing terms before the first round of golf. Here’s what you have to know about golf course terms:

  • Golf Tee- It is the wooden peg you place your golf ball on at the start of the hole.
  • Fairway- It is the part of the golf course which leads to the green, generally where putting takes place.
  • The rough- It is the wild area on either side of the fairway. This area is often filled with long grass and trees.
  • Hazard- Streams, bunkers, ponds, and trees are the ones. Anything that comes between you and successfully getting the golf ball in the hole is known as a hazard.
  • Golf Tee Box- It is the area in which you first play the ball at the beginning of the hole.
  • The green- It is the plush and soft ground that encircles the hole.
  • Bunker- It is the sand-filled ditch that surrounds the green.

Bag essentials that you need to consider

Now that you are aware of the common terms of golf let us have a look at the bag essentials you need to consider:

  • Clubs

Generally, every bag has 14 clubs in a set. The basics you will need are a driver, irons, woods, wedges, and a putter. Based on the distance from the hole and the strength of the swing, you might need to utilize all the clubs during the round. Be sure to practice with each club as part of the pre-round warmup.

  • Tees

You will only use the tees when hitting on the tee box. They will also come in handy to fix the balls in the green. Grabbing a bag of regular tees will work. A lot of the clubs will offer complimentary tees before teeing off as well, just in case you forget.

  • Markers and balls

Is the kind of golf balls you buy important? Yes, it is. However, if you are just starting out, a bargain box will be just fine. The truth is that as a beginner, you will likely lose a few balls to the drink or be out of bounds. That is why it is smart to carry extras in teh bag. As for ball markers, you can use them for anything small or flat.

  • Golf towels

When buying golf gloves, remember you are purchasing from the non-dominant hand. For example, if you are right-handed, you will need gloves for the left hand and vice versa. It is as simple as that! Having the gloves will safeguard your hands from abrasion, for which you will be grateful. It is also a great idea to have an additional one on hand in case you sweat through it in the first few holes.

The experts recommend having towels handy on the course. Consider using one for clearing the debris off the clubs and ball and the other for drying sweat from the face and aims during the round. Consider opting for towels with moisture-wicking fabric to keep you comfortable. Look for the golf towels with a ring cutout, which enables you to hook them onto the bag for easy access.

The etiquettes

Consider arriving early enough to warm up or grab a pre-round snack. However, you will want to check in with the golf shop at least 20 minutes before the tee time at a very minimum.

Wrapping Up

Punctuality with your arrival is just as important as getting everything you need in the bag, like the golf gloves. Upon your arrival, some courses do have a dedicated place to drop the bag off near the parking lot; at others, you are expected to carry the bag by yourself. Know the policies of a course before you make any decision with your bag.
