‘Nothing will stop us’ – Netanyahu says war against Hamas will continue despite global pressure

Israel will continue its war on Hamas even if it loses international support, the Israeli prime minister has said.

Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Israel would “go all the way” in its war in Gaza, during a visit to a military base in southern Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

“We’re going all the way, there’s no question about it,” he told troops. “I say this despite the huge pain, but also despite international pressures. Nothing will stop us, we’re going all the way, until we’re victorious, and nothing less.”

Mr Netanyahu’s remarks came a day after Joe Biden warned Israel was losing international support because of its “indiscriminate” bombing of Gaza and just hours before Jake Sullivan, the US national security advisor, is due to arrive in Israel for talks with the Israeli war cabinet.

The US president told donors at a fundraising event earlier this week that Mr Netanyahu should drop the hardliners in his government and reconsider his opposition to a Palestinian state.

The White House has also been pushing for the Palestinian Authority, which runs the West Bank, to help take control of Gaza once the war is over.

Mr Netanyahu, who admits to disagreements with the US on the future of Gaza, said he would not allow the territory to become “Hamas-stan” or “Fatah-stan” on Tuesday.

The Biden administration has been Israel’s biggest military backer since the war began, sending 14,000 tank shells among a host of weapons and ammunition.

But that support may be at risk if Mr Netanyahu continues to ignore international warnings over the civilian death toll, which is put at more than 18,000 people by the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.

When Mr Sullivan lands in Israel on Thursday, he will not place new conditions or red lines on the military aid the US provides to Israel, say US sources, but is expected to deliver what one local observer described as “tough love”.

“While Biden said last month that conditioning aid was a ‘worthwhile thought’, the president ultimately believes that a strategy of quiet pressure on Israel to change its tactics has been more effective than threatening to withhold weapons,” CNN quoted a Biden administration official as saying.

Mr Biden faces pressure at home to rein in the Israeli offensive. Young US voters are broadly against Israel’s actions, polling shows, and they will be a key demographic in the 2024 election.

Nevertheless, stopping the war completely at this stage does not serve the security interests of the region, said Matthew Miller, a US State Department spokesman, on Wednesday.

But he added: “We don’t want [the war] to last one day beyond what is necessary.”

The White House said on Wednesday it had told Israel of its concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza.

“We have had concerns, and we’ve expressed those concerns about the prosecution of this military campaign, even while acknowledging that it’s Hamas that started this,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

Mr Sullivan would discuss with the Israelis the need for them to be more surgical and precise with their strikes against Hamas targets in Gaza, he added.

Mr Sullivan made a previously unannounced stop in Saudi Arabia on his way to Israel on Wednesday, as part of “broader diplomatic efforts to maintain stability across the region and prevent the Israel-Hamas conflict from expanding” and to discuss work to build a sustainable peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians, an official told Reuters.
