The summit saw a new class of world leaders come together under the same roof, and it immediately appeared that cliques had formed

• Donald Trump unexpectedly left the two-day summit early, reportedly to meet with U.S. national security leaders about the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.

The G7 Summit got off to a dramatic start this year, as a new class of world leaders rallied in Alberta, Canada, to catch up and discuss what's happening around the globe.

During the summit, held in Kananaskis on June 16 and 17, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was caught on camera dramatically rolling her eyes during a whispered conversation between her and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Macron, seated beside Meloni in the round-table working session with other members of the summit, leaned to his right to whisper a message to Meloni, who stared intently ahead.

Macron blocked his mouth with his hand, so his comment was indistinguishable, but Meloni reacted with a huge eye roll that quickly circulated in photos online.

Meloni's body language was reminiscent of another moment of friction at a past G7 summit — when then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel was photographed in 2018 leaning over a table to glare at President Donald Trump, who in turn, folded his arms across his chest and glared back.

At a separate international summit the year prior, Merkel also made headlines — and memes — for her own eye roll that was seemingly directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two-day G7 Summit is held annually between Italy, France, the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany and Japan. It previously was called the G8 Summit, including Russia, until Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014 got his nation expelled.

Following a series of international elections in recent months, the G7 Summit included a new group of world leaders than in previous years — including one returning leader now that Trump is back in the fold.

In addition to Meloni, Macron and Trump, the event rallied Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa.

The meeting's primary purpose is for the seven nations, which have been identified as having advanced economies and a shared belief in democracy, to discuss trade with each other.

The summit comes months after Trump started a trade war by imposing widespread tariffs on many imports, including from ally nations represented at the summit.

Trump unexpectedly left the G7 early on Monday night, though not before he and the other leaders signed and issued a brief statement that Iran "can never have a nuclear weapon," and sought to begin the "de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza," 

Trump reportedly left because of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, which escalated with a series of attacks last week.
