Absolutely — and it’s one of the most damaging legacies of colonialism.

Did You Know?

Many of today’s borders in Africa were drawn in Europe — with no African input?

In 1884–1885, European powers gathered at the Berlin Conference — not in Africa, but in Germany — to carve up the African continent among themselves.
There were zero African leaders present.

With maps and rulers, European diplomats drew borders that split up ethnic groups, cultures, kingdoms, and communities, while forcing rival groups into the same artificial states.

🇫🇷🇬🇧🇩🇪🇧🇪 Countries like Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, and Italy claimed huge chunks of Africa — not for peace, but for resources, control, and empire-building.

The result?

  • Centuries-old kingdoms dismantled

  • Ethnic tensions fueled by forced coexistence

  • Conflicts and instability that still affect Africa today

  • 54 African nations with borders mostly unchanged since colonization

Quote for Thought

“Africa’s borders were not drawn with ink and understanding — they were drawn with greed and disregard.”
— Wounds of the Map
