  1. Coagulants and Flocculants: Coagulants and flocculants are chemicals used to remove suspended particles, colloids, and turbidity from water. Flocculants, such as polyacrylamide or polyaluminum chloride, are then added to help the particles settle and form larger flocs, which can be easily removed through sedimentation or filtration.

  2. Disinfectants: Disinfectants are chemicals used to kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms present in water, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Chlorine-based disinfectants, such as chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite, or chlorine dioxide, are commonly used in water treatment plants. Other disinfectants like ozone, ultraviolet (UV) light, and hydrogen peroxide are also employed for water disinfection, offering alternative methods that do not leave residual chemicals in the treated water.

  3. pH Adjusting Agents: pH adjusting agents are chemicals used to regulate the acidity or alkalinity of water. By adjusting the pH, these chemicals optimize the effectiveness of other treatment processes and help prevent corrosion in distribution systems. Common pH adjusting agents include lime (calcium hydroxide), soda ash (sodium carbonate), and sulfuric acid.

  4. Antiscalants and Scale Inhibitors: Antiscalants and scale inhibitors are chemicals used to prevent the formation of mineral scale deposits in water treatment systems. These deposits can clog pipes, reduce heat transfer efficiency, and impair the performance of equipment. Antiscalants work by inhibiting the crystallization or precipitation of minerals such as calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and silica, allowing for efficient operation and extended equipment lifespan.

  5. Activated Carbon: Activated carbon is a porous material that is highly effective in removing organic contaminants, taste, odor, and certain chemicals from water. It works through a process called adsorption, where impurities are trapped onto the surface of the carbon. Activated carbon is commonly used in point-of-use and point-of-entry water filters, as well as in large-scale water treatment plants.

  6. Ion Exchange Resins: Ion exchange resins are used to remove dissolved ions from water through an exchange process. These resins are designed to selectively remove specific ions such as calcium, magnesium, or heavy metals and exchange them with less harmful ions. Ion exchange resins are widely used for water softening, demineralization, and removal of trace contaminants.
