The two-star general overseeing the Air Force’s B-2 fleet said the military’bomber strikes against Iran may be just the beginning.

Following the American B-2 Spirit bomber’s role in the recent Operation Midnight Hammer airstrikes that targeted Iran’s key nuclear facilities, the potential for increased operations down the road may be high. According to the two-star general overseeing the Air Force’s B-2 fleet, the military should invest more heavily in preparing its bombers for similar missions. Maj. Gen. Jason Armagost stated on a webinar hosted by the Air & Space Forces Association’s Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies that he would “never assume that any single strike is going to be enough,” adding that “We have to be ready and postured and capable of generating, very quickly … across the platforms, to bring that long range, global capability, [and] mass to problem sets.” Armagost also explained that while the June strikes against Tehran’s nuclear facilities were deemed to be a success, “we had to be ready for what was the next question to be asked, or what was the next problem to be confronted.”

The B-2

The Northrop Grumman “Spirit” bomber is perhaps the most well-recognized out of the Air Force’s bomber fleet thanks to its futuristic flying-wing design. As a heavy strategic bomber, the Spirit can carry some of the most lethal ordnance in the US military’s inventory. As part of the platform’s recent Operation Midnight Hammer mission, the Spirits reportedly used 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators against underground targets. Notably, the B-2 platform is capable of operating at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet with an unfueled range of more than 6,000 miles. Essentially, the impressive bomber can fly virtually to any point across the globe without needing to refuel.

The B-52

Known as the Stratofortress, the B-52 long-range subsonic strategic bomber has remained a critical component of the Air Force’s bomber fleet for nearly seven decades. As a product of lessons learned from World War II, the Stratofortress was designed to provide the Air Materiel Command with the ability to carry out long-range missions without needing to rely on intermediate bases controlled by foreign militaries. Over the years, the B-52 has undergone several hefty upgrade packages in order for the platform to remain relevant in the modern era. Today, the newer B-52H iteration can carry more than 70,000 pounds of diverse weapons, including AGM-84 Harpoon missiles, AGM-86A air-launched cruise missiles, Joint Direct Attack Munitions, and numerous other weapons.

The B-1B

The B-1B Lancer is the Air Force’s variable-sweep wing, heavy bomber. Nicknamed the “Bone,” this platform has served the Air Force since the early days of the Cold War. Though the Lancer was conceptualized at the tail end of World War II, the resulting bomber would not actually come to fruition until the 1980s. In terms of lethality, the bomber can lug upwards of 70,000 tons of ordnance. Additionally, the B-1B sports an enhanced radar and a minimized radar cross-section that helps it avoid enemy detection. The most recent Lancer iteration can notably carry 36 AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles.
