They can be a mainstay of your marketing program online.

People love contests and the opportunity to win things, so running contests with your favorite bloggers can be a genius idea. Generally speaking, the prize will be a copy or download of your book unless you have merchandise (t-shirts, hats, mugs, etc.) to offer instead. Some authors give blog contest winners autographed copies of their books as an incentive. If a blogger reviews or writes about your book and you accompany it with a contest or giveaway, you extend the visibility and more chances to reach your target readers. It's common for people to become more interested in a book over time.

Starting early when you want your book covered by prominent bloggers is wise. Like their media counterparts, popular bloggers today receive many pitches for coverage. Last-minute requests may not receive coverage at all, or they might be less prominent than articles planned ahead. Bloggers may also want to ask questions, interview you, or discuss your book's content. All work better when there is ample time. From a practical standpoint, if you submit your book and are waiting to receive a response, working in advance gives you more time to follow up and be noticed.
