Meta Announces Workforce Reduction to Boost Performance

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has revealed plans to cut approximately 3,600 positions, equating to 5% of its global workforce. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the decision reflects a strategic shift to address underperformance swiftly, with plans to rehire for these roles in 2025.

In a memo to employees, Zuckerberg described the move as part of preparations for an “intense year,” emphasizing the need to elevate performance standards and streamline the process of managing “low performers.”

Job Cuts and Support for Affected Employees

The layoffs will impact Meta’s global workforce, which currently numbers around 72,000 employees. U.S.-based employees are expected to be notified by February 10, while international employees will be informed later. Zuckerberg assured that impacted employees would receive comprehensive severance packages, highlighting Meta’s commitment to supporting those affected.

This approach marks a shift in Meta’s handling of performance-based job cuts, which have traditionally occurred gradually. However, this year’s process will be expedited as part of the company’s broader strategy. For more details on this decision, check out the full report on the Meta workforce reduction here.

Historical Context and Strategic Shifts

Meta has undergone similar workforce reductions in recent years. In 2023, the company eliminated 10,000 roles as part of a cost-saving initiative. The prior year, during what Zuckerberg called the “year of efficiency,” Meta reduced its workforce by 11,000 positions.

This latest round of layoffs is part of a broader realignment under Zuckerberg’s leadership. The company has scaled back its fact-checking and diversity initiatives while doubling down on performance-driven strategies. According to Zuckerberg, these changes aim to create teams composed of the strongest contributors, ensuring Meta remains competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.

Cultural Transformation Under Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg’s personal leadership style is also evolving. In a podcast with Joe Rogan, he discussed his interest in martial arts, describing it as an outlet to channel “masculine energy” and express himself authentically. “When you’re leading a company, people don’t want to see you as ruthless,” he noted. “But in fighting, you can be competitive, and people recognize that as authentic.”

As Meta navigates 2025’s challenges, these workforce cuts and cultural shifts mark a significant new phase for the tech giant. For more updates and insights, visit Euro News.
