Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States by Chief Justice John Roberts in an inauguration ceremony inside the Capitol Rotunda on Monday.
"I return to the presidency confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success," Trump said after taking his oath of office. "A tide of change is sweeping the country."
Trump beat then-Vice President Kamala Harris in November's election four years after losing to Joe Biden. Trump is the second person in U.S. history to win a nonconsecutive presidential term, following Grover Cleveland in 1884 and 1892.
Extreme cold temperatures in Washington, D.C., forced the ceremony to be moved indoors for the first time since 1985. Guests in the rotunda included former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, some of Trump's Cabinet picks and allies, including several major tech executives, as well as Trump's family members. Additional guests watched the ceremony from Emancipation Hall, while supporters watched from inside Capital One Arena.
This afternoon Trump will go to the White House for a signing ceremony in the Oval Office. He will deliver remarks at three separate celebratory events tonight.
